ABOUT RESPONSIBLE CARE

THAILAND Responsible Care ®

International Background

The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) is the world-wide voice of the chemical industry, representing chemical manufacturers and producers all over the world. It accounts for more than 75 per cent of chemical manufacturing operations with a production exceeding USD 1,6 trillion annually. Almost 30 percent of this production is traded internationally. ICCA promotes and co-ordinates Responsible Care and other voluntary chemical industry initiatives.

ICCA has a central role in the exchange of information within the international industry, and in the development of position statements on matters of policy. It is also the main channel of communication between the industry and various international organizations that are concerned with health, environment and trade-related issues, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD).

The global chemical industry has launched a Responsible Care website - www.responsiblecare.org - providing general information about Responsible Care (its history, coverage and objectives) as well as descriptions of its members' Responsible Care programmes and links to their Status Reports.

This brand new website also presents regular updates on Responsible Care under News and Events. Additional features include FAQs and a Links section.

Responsible Care is the chemical industry’s global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work together to continuously improve their health, safety and environmental performance, and to communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes.

Responsible Care was first conceived in Canada and launched in 1985 to address public concerns about the manufacture, distribution and use of chemicals. The number of chemical industry associations embracing the Responsible Care ethic has grown from 6 to 52 countries since 1992.

The Responsible Care ® ethic helps our industry to operate safely, profitably and with due care for future generations, and was commended by UNEP as making a significant contribution to sustainable development at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.
